5HeatSheet or Space Blanket? Tough choiceJul 16, 2010
By Wulfstan "wulfstan"
OK, I have reviewed the HeatSheet blanket and Bivvie before, it's a great product for survival where space and weight are significant considerations- the two person size or the bivvie weigh about 3oz, and are about the size of a bar of soap.

At the far end of the scale would be a good high quality military surplus wool blanket- 6+ pounds. Good for a roomy trunk, your SUV, cabin or in the home.

Here, in the middle is the "Space' or "All Weather" blanket. A super tough laminate of fiber scrim and aluminized plastic, it weighs 12oz, and is about the size of a trade paperback book. There are several advantages of the "space blanket" (note the name is also used for the super-thin one-use mylar blankets, don't get them confused):
1. Re-usable over and over, these will take a beating.
2. More uses- they can be used as a tarp, picnic blanket, or on the floor of your tent to protect the tent bottom and reflect heat back. This is my primary use, I find that one of these- PLUS a pad- works about twice as well as a pad only.
3. They have grommets so are easier to use.
4. In the desert, they make a good sun protection tarp.

So, if one can afford the weight and room, I'd suggest one of these for survival purposes on a hiking trip (one of these plus a HeatSheet bivvie would be even better). Yes, another 12 oz is a little much, but with one of these for two hikers, it's not so bad.

On the other end of the scale, if you don't want a big heavy wool blanket cluttering up your trunk- or want another layer in "cold country" then this is also a good choice. It's also good for the office.

Get the orange/silver version, as it works for signaling too.

5A great product. Many uses.Oct 28, 2011

I use these to keep warm at my kid's sporting events. I also keep one in my car and take one when I go camping/hiking. They are much tougher (and I think they work better) job than the plain mylar sheet. When I was new to hiking, I made the mistake of wearing all cotton materials on a hike (not a good idea due to water retention). I live in Western Washington and, big surprise, it rained on me. I found myself at about 6000 feet, soaking wet, and freezing (very stupid on my part). It took about 60 seconds from the time I wrapped up in one of these to get comfortably warm. Another added plus is that it features eyelets so you can tie down if you need to. It is very light, in fact, I have started carrying one with me in my laptop bag when I go to work.

5great lightweight tarpJul 18, 2011
By Nicholas V. Snellenberg
Love this blanket! It's a great light-weight tarp and folds up to about the size of a paperback book. I bought the orange one for our emergency kit and have pulled it out and used it at several outdoor concerts now. My only concern is it's durability. after just the first time using it I noticed a very small hole at one of the folds.

5the strongest one i could findSep 09, 2011
By James mang "veg"
i looked all over amazon for a space blanket that would be durable enough to last a while and look pretty good while doing it. I came to this one, after reading some of the reviews i decided to buy it. I go out on survival trips a lot and i must say this thing is made to last i am pretty happy with this purchase.

5good and reusableJan 04, 2012
By originalevcrawfish "originalevcrawfish"
this is a good space blanket, not the thin one use type. have practiced building a quickie 5 minute shelter with it and it looks like it will hold up pretty good. this is not a long term or a lot of use item. it can be reused, but not indefinitely. but should be good as an emergency shelter for a short term scenario
