solid, well made, craftmanshipDec 20, 2009
By jerrod i love this knife. for the money i wouldnt ever buy anything else. i took the handles off mine and wrapped it with paracord, but the g10's are great (just wanted a different look). needs sharpening out of the box. full tang. thick. heavier than you would expect when you first pick it up. the sheath is not awesome, but its pretty nice. i like all the different mounting options that the sheath gives you. this knife is built to last. the sharpener than comes with it is kind of crappy but can easily be replaced. good job smith and wesson! this is best fixed blade tactical knife that ive ever purchased, but its definitely not the most expensive ive purchased. after i bought mine, i went back and bought one as a gift for my brother. 5 stars... *****

Good valueNov 28, 2011
By B. Hall First things first, as stated by most everyone else this is a big knife that is suited for big tough jobs. Strap it to your bug out bag and you'll have a very dependable tool. Remember that a large knife can do everything a small knife will do but a small knife can't always do the job of a larger knife, especially chop or pry and this knife is a great chopper and batons very well. It comes fairly sharp but with a little work can be brought to an razors edge. Edge retention is typical of 440 Stainless. Although the sheath was servicable I was not thrilled with it and replaced it.

Excellent heavy duty knife!Oct 05, 2011
By W. Houston This is a BIG knife. It is solid, weighted, and comes out of the box whisper sharp.
It is a heavy duty knife and you'll not be carrying this around with you as a protection knife. It's probably illegal to do so anyway. It's not concealable easily if that's your thing. so keep that in mind.
It's stamped "Hammer Forged Surgical China" near the handle in very small print with a written "CKSURG" above it in tan. The opposite side has "Titanium 440 steel" - by the handle as well.
The knife itself has "Taylor Cutlery designed by Morgan A Taylor" on one side and the "Smith and Wesson Homeland Security Knife" you see on the product picture.
It comes with a sheath that, while plastic lined with cloth, seems heavy-duty enough to handle the knife it was made for, and it has a pouch for the sharpening stone (included) built onto the sheath in a sturdy fashion. It has either a fabric belt loop at the top of the sheath, or a metal half ring at the bottom of the sheath. The knife is retained in the sheath with a velcro fastener loop, but the sheath will not just drop the knife *if* fully seated - even in an upside down position and despite it's weight.
The handle feels like pressure stamped plastic, but I could be wrong. It has the same feel as "Trex" decking, but is covered in unobtrusive ridges for gripping. This isn't to say it feels cheap. It feels solid and well-built. It is attached to the shaft by 3X 6-point allen key screws. There is a slight protusion at the erear end of the handle that is part of the main shaft that allows for cord or string, and towards the blade itself, the handle ends with two protrusions as a guard, both with holes for rope, etc.
Smith and Wesson have made excellent knives with great material and a durable design for at least as long as I've been buying them, going on 15 years, and this knife does not disappoint.

Well worth the moneyMay 17, 2011
By aroundtoit This knife has 440 stamped on the blade. It's advertised as 440C but doesn't say so in the Taylor catalogue that I can see. Frankly though, I'm very satisfied with this purchase. It is well made for the price and the sheath is fine too. I believe this knife would have the same effect as a short machete except that there is some stab capability as well.

Awesome knifeMar 31, 2011
By Jared Kalla First off, this is a HUGE knife. It feels like a sword due to the weight, but that makes it feel much sturdier. The edge is pretty sharp when it came in the way over-sized box. I gave it a 5 because it is as sturdy as a knife can get. Overall.... buy it.
