3First Impressions with **Updated Review** First summer of useJun 13, 2008
By Brent M. Pechumer "Brento"
After one summer of use, I am able to say I would rate this tent like I did on my first impression. It held up well during five camping trips. One included 50 mph winds and two hours of rain with eight people inside! The only complaint I have is the difficulty getting a large enough and level enough area for this monster tent.
All of the screens and zippers held up and the poles are all straight. The tent holds heat well at night. We slept in 45-50°F with plain sleeping bags: nothing extreme. We had a queen-sized air mattress, a double mattress, two bunk-style cots, a large 32" dog crate and a 3x3 folding table in the tent. We also had our clothes bags and personal items in the tent. There is so much room! Great for families.
So I would recommend this tent for people looking for maximum room and plenty of storage area. I would not recommend this tent for people with limited camping site space or are camping without help to set it up. It is BIG!
Below is my original first impression.

Just to clarify-I have only set this tent up in the basement so far. My wife and I purchased this tent after weeks and weeks of research. It was one of three other tents to review. The other two tents were a Eureka Copper Canyon and the Gigatent Mt. Kingsman. This reason for our choice was two factors. First was price. Based on features, options and size, this Gigatent Mt. Barren wins hands down. The other factor was versatility. We camp with two young children and two dogs. Quite often we have family members or other children join us. The Mt. Barren allows you to divide the tent into one, two, three or four rooms.
The set-up of this tent was fairly easy. The instructions were a bit vague. My nephew and I set the tent up in the basement in about 20 minutes and two disassembles. Now that I have done it once (and labeled the poles) it should be fairly easy to have it up in 10 minutes or so.

Overall, I would say I am happy so far. It has tons of space (210 square feet) and lots of windows. I will post new info after we have camped in the tent a few times. For a good look at the tent use this link.

4EXCELLENT tent for the moneyFeb 09, 2010
By M. Standifer
I usually don't write reviews but I was so pleased with this tent I just had to. I've seen complaints on other websites about this tent but I bought it anyway and I'm glad I did. Those nay-sayers just don't know how to set up a tent.

I have the bigger better syndrome and this tent scratches that itch...big time 18 x 12. Only downside to that is finding an open area or flat enough for that size tent. That part was difficult. I've camped and backpacked for close to 20 years now so I know a thing or two about tents. Here's what I can tell you about this one:

1. You won't take it backpacking because it weighs in at 40+lbs. So what...it's a family tent. Car camping or your 4 wheel drive where ever you can get to. This is ok.

2. After setting it up in my garage before going out, I was able to set this up with help in about 20 minutes. After the trip I was able to do it by myself in about 30 minutes. Poles go together easy and if you take your time the tent goes up fairly easy.

3. Some people complained about stability. Hogwash...this tent is rock stable because (1) The rain fly has velcro on the underside that attaches to the tent poles significantly increasing stability and (2) the rain fly has guy lines you can attach to stakes further increasing stability. It would take a hurricane to move this tent even as large as it is.

4. It is very sturdy. First trip out we ended up in an ice storm with 1/8" of ice over the entire tent. The tent understandably sagged a bit in some areas but did not come close to structural failure. Poles didn't even bend. BIG plus there.

5. Tent is VERY water resistant. Melted ice never came through. I set the tent up in my back yard when I got home to air it out and of course it rained for the next 4 days. I went outside to check it out during that time and the rain fly had no leaks. There was a small hole in two of the corners that let in a few trickles but I was able to seal those. Also, the material covering the zippers had become saturated and let in a few trickles that made a very small trail of water. I coated those areas with fabric sealer when the rain stopped. This is EXCELLENT performance for those of you that don't understand a typical tent's water resistance.

6. Despite the large amount of space between the rain fly and the tent, there was no noticeable air current inside the tent (no rain blew in either).

Other notes: This is definitely a 3 season tent but I've always stretched the limits on gear and this one took the 4th season in stride reasonably well. If you are looking for a 2 or 3 season family tent...this is your tent.

Inside there is a divider in the middle that zips closed making it a true 2 room tent. It says it will sleep 10 but realistically it will sleep 6 on twin air mattresses quite easily.

1 door on each side of the tent (1 per room) makes for easy access. We used one room for storing our gear and slept in the other room.

Here is one of the better bonuses of this tent: The carrying bag it comes in is actually big enough to hold the tent and poles AFTER you repack it. I mean, really, who amongst us has put up a tent and then tried to fold it back so it would fit in the bag it came in...with the poles. Never happens first time and many times not even the 2nd. THIS tent bag is huge with extra room...yes extra room.

4Big TentMar 08, 2010
By Deb "If you can't find it online, you can't find it!"
We camped in this twice last summer. It's huge. There is plenty of room to move around. I did have a problem with the poles on one end. Gigatent replaced them very quickly. I paid a GREAT price (under $130 with shipping), so I'm not complaining. I found nothing else this size out there.
The tent is sturdy once set. I think my pole issue happened in the original shipment... setting it up put stress on a crack that was already there. The poles are much bigger/thicker than any other tent I have set up.
I do wish there were more hooks inside.
We bought a great UFO shaped tent light that completely lights one side of the cabin (with the hook)at night.

4First time camping with the family - used this tentSep 12, 2009
By Deb "If you can't find it online, you can't find it!"
This is a monster of a tent. We had two large REI cots on one side for the adults. On the other side, the kids had smaller cots. TONS of extra room for bags, shoes, towels and whatever else the kids dragged in. I liked having two sides for the family. At night, we opened up the middle and just enjoyed being inside away from the bugs.

The set up is easier the second time! The longer pole needs to be on top of the cross poles when you raise the whole thing up. This is not explicitly stated in the instructions, but we figured it out with trial and error.

The kids enjoyed sleeping near their 'secret' windows which are the vents at the bottom of the tent.

Overall, I would recommend this tent to others. I found a GREAT price for it online. Keep watching the sales.

Happy Camping.

5Huge tent, well designed, well made, great valueDec 30, 2011
By VAHagel
This is our third large whole family tent and also the best so far. When our second one was destroyed in a huge rain storm with 75 mph winds, we did a boatload of research on large tents that could accommodate our whole family comfortably (2 parents, 3 adult children, two younger boys, grandson, and huge dog). One plus in design and construction over the destroyed tent is that none of the poles are connected to each other by plastic "T" or "H" pieces. The connector pieces are metal. seams are very sturdily made as well.

The ability to have 4 separate rooms and to stand up inside were high on the list too. This tent has a sewn-in divider splitting it into two rooms (one slightly bigger than the other), and two removable dividers to split each of the two rooms into two rooms (a double air mattress can easily fit in each room). Each half has its own door (on opposite sides of the tent), a large window opposite the door, and a huge window on the side. Ventilation is terrific - great no-seeum roof panels - a big requirement in our southeastern PA area with hot & humid summer nights. The rainfly covers nicely and even has a couple of small clear plastic spots for light to shine through (not alot of light, but some). There are attached pockets for keeping gear off the floor.

As we always do, we set it up in our backyard prior to taking it on an actual trip. This is a must as it is a bit confusing the first time around! Once you see how it goes together, it is quite easy and would take my 10 year old and I about 20 minutes or less to set up. DO follow the directions as to the order of putting up the poles/sections. It is easy for two people once you've tried it if you follow the order of the directions. However, I would not advise being under the pressure of being at the campgrounds to set it up the first time. (For us, this is true for every tent, even "pup" tents).

My son figured out the trick is to have one person hold up the section of frame you're trying to "plug in" to the bottom pins at the sides - otherwise the insertion would be nearly impossible. Also, when putting on the rain fly, attach the side-middle to the fiberglass pole provided for the fly sides prior to securing the rest of the fly, for the same reason. The poles are very sturdy - some are metal and some fiberglass. The fiberglass ones are heavier duty than any on our previous tents and I expect they will hold up well. I would recommend keeping the poles out of the bag with the rest of the equipment and the tent as the poles are quite heavy and this makes picking up the tent and then the poles a one person job. Otherwise, carrying it requires 2 people or one very strong one.
I would have preferred to have already backyard tested it in a good rainstorm, but the rainfly is tight enough that it should stay dry. The bathtub bottom is quite deep and should withstand any surface runoff. I haven't sealed the seams and won't unless it leaks without doing so. It did withstand 25-30 mph winds with the extra guy wires staked in for the rainfly. I would recommend taking some precaution with the guy wires as they are black and invisible at night. My son and I slept in it on a 25 degree (F) night on an air mattress and another night on pads under our sleeping bags and, dressed appropriately, we were warm. I don't think the tent keeps much cold at bay, but it does keep some.

The only thing negative I can say is that the tent connects to the frame in several places by means of plastic buckles like the ones on high chair safety straps or canvass computer case shoulder straps. One of them broke while we were putting the tent together, but was easily fixed with duct tape (something we always bring along camping). While this was disappointing, we determined not to return or exchange it as this will not affect the function or strength of the tent whatsoever and is about 6 1/2 feet above the ground so unless you're looking for it you probably wouldn't ever notice it. The defect was that one of the buckles was just too tight in its slot and broke while being inserted rather forcefully. I did not view this as enough of a problem to even deduct a star.

I will try to update this when we have the chance to have it up in a rain storm (hopefully in our backyard first), to report on water tightness. However it is advertised as "weatherproof" (as opposed to a tent we returned that was "water resistant" and leaked).
