Tree Hanger for life.Aug 07, 2009
By Reginald M. Dela Cruz You cannot beat the convenience and simplicity that this hammock provides to any camping situation.
Pros: Since you are off the ground you never have to worry about level terrain or water drainage. Best sleep I have ever experienced in the wilderness. If you sleep on the diagonal you can lay flat. I am also a side sleeper and it felt comfortable to lay sideways. You can unhook one of the outside lines and sit/lay on the hammock like a lounge chair. Perfect if you are preparing a meal on your camp stove. The entrance is ingenious and stays shut even if you move around alot. The netting does its job and is also convenient since it gives you a 360 view around you. Just in case you need to look around for whats rustling around in the bushes.
Ultralight. A few ounces over 2 lbs. Packs smaller than any tent I have used. Especially with the additions of snakeskins. The hammock and be setup in under a minute and taken down within 30 seconds after getting use to it.
Cons:The straps provided (tree huggers) tend to run a little small, making it hard to wrap them firmly around the tree. It can easily be remedied with a quick trip to the hardware store and purchasing some longer cargo straps for a few bucks.
The instructions on how to tie the hammock up could be a little clearer. I figured it out after a couple of tries but I felt that it wasnt the most efficient way to secure the hammock. One simple solution is attaching a carabiner through the tree huggers and using a prussik knot to fasten it tight.
If there are no trees in site you can always use hiking sticks in a vain attempt to hang. However the hammock doubles as a decent bivy.
Amazing product. Extremely well built. I will never sleep on the ground again.

This is my first hammock, and I am enjoying the freedom it allows in choosing set-up locations. I've used mine a handful of times now, and it has been a good and fairly smooth experience, guided by the suggestions I've found at Hammock Forums on the internet. There are several issues I've encountered and had to learn my way around, such as finding the right knots to secure everything quickly and easily, the right angles and levels to set it up at, arranging myself and my stuff inside at the same time, and the need for an underquilt when using a down sleeping bag. I believe I'll have everything figured out soon. I can't think of any obvious failing of the hammock, and my only desire so far would have been a bit more tarp coverage. I highly recommend the "snake skins" accessory, which makes setup, takedown and storage very simple and fast. I also got the water catchment accessory for the tarp, but have not had the chance to use it yet. I am a happy hammocker.

Hennessy Expedition HammockAug 09, 2009
By E. Willis I now have both the ultralight and the expedition version of these hammocks. I have used both hammocks for the past 3 years on monthly boy scout campouts. These are amazing hammocks and I will not sleep on the ground if I have a choice between ground and hammock. There is a short learning curve on setting them up and the innovative entry via a bottom hook and loop lined opening but the end result is well worth it. Sleeping in the hammock rivals home. I have endured thunderstorms and heavy rain without incident by using the optional over-sized rain fly. Material and workmanship are first rate. Several other adult leaders as well as scouts in our troop now use the hammock. I will backpack both models but my preference is the ultra-light version - I use the expedition model for weekend campouts and Boundary Water trips. Be advised you will need insulation in the form of an inexpensive closed cell ground pad. If you wish there are aftermarket outer quilts (several on-line vendors) or you can order an insulation kit direct from the manufacturer. To date I haven't used the hammock for winter camping. Check out the You-tube videos for more information.

Hennessy Expedition Asym can weather the storm.Aug 16, 2010
By andyblack This hammock is a great product that is well built and easy to hang and use, once you learn how to tie the knot that the manufacturer recommends for attaching the suspension ropes to the tree hugger slings.
I received the Hennessy Hammock in its stuff sack, which has the directions for hanging and use of the hammock printed on the back. My scale read 2.75 lbs. - exactly the advertised weight. The diagram on the stuff sack that shows how to tie the knot that holds the spectra rope at the end of the hammock to the webbing strap that goes around the tree was unclear to me. I couldn't figure out how to tie the knot, so I consulted a guy I know who has a Hennessy Hammock and he showed me how to tie the knot. I believe there is a video of how to tie the knot on Hennessy's website as well as on YouTube, in case you don't know anyone that can show you firsthand.
Once I had learned how to hang the hammock properly and practiced putting it up a couple of times, it was time to go on a backpacking trip and test it in the wilderness. I packed up the new hammock and did sections two and three of the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. On day one, we didn't start out until about 12:30, so we didn't get all the way to where we wanted to camp for the night before we were hit by a terrible thunderstorm about an hour before dark. Ironically, we decided to stop at a place called the Slaughter Creek tent site, halfway up Blood Mountain to wait out the deadly storm (What were we thinking?). I barely had time to hang the hammock and jump inside when the side of the mountain we were on got blasted by 30 minutes of 50 mph wind, horizontal rain and about 50 lightning strikes all around us. I thought we were goners, but no lightning struck us. I was impressed by the Hennessy Hammock during the storm. There was very little sway, even with such strong wind blowing directly perpendicular to the side of the tarp. The shock cords on the side of the hammock are very effective. Despite the fact that I didn't have time to pitch the tarp so that it was anywhere close to being taught, not very much rain was able to blow through onto me. I mainly got wet from the rain bouncing up off the ground underneath me (a small river formed on the 20 degree slope I was hanging over). At one point, a fairly large limb fell on the tarp, but it bounced right off, causing no damage. When the storm was finally over, I climbed out of the hammock and drew the tarp down tighter and closer to the hammcok sides. It rained about half the night after that, but I didn't get any wetter than I already was.
On night two of the trip, I was able to hang the hammock at the perfect anlge and height and stake it and the tarp correctly. I found that I could lay pretty flat and sleep comfortably if I lay like the directions on the bag said to. During the previous night's storm I had gotten a little too cool (despite it being August), so I stopped by the hostel and store that's at the bottom of the other side of Blood Mountain and bought me a short Z Lite sleeping pad to put in the hammock to sleep on. That did the trick. I stayed warm the next night. While at the store, we learned that the storm had taken their power out. We also saw search planes and helicopters looking for a helicopter that had gone down, presumably due to the high winds.
Overall, I am impressed with the Hennessy Hammock. It's easy to set up and use and it's quite comfortable to sleep in, even if you sleep on your side like I do. It also does well in inclement weather. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a lightwieght, convinient and comfortable shelter for camping and backpacking.
