Description:

CrankBrothers Multi-17 Tool features both a chain tool and a disc-brake-rotor-friendly Torx T-25 wrench alongside the usual package. The Crank Brothers Multi 17 Tool has mountain bikers first in mind. Nothing besides a flat or a broken bone will stop your ride as quickly as a busted chain, and if you ride hard you're bound to snap a link sometime. The Multi 17 might not be the absolute lightest tool or smallest on the market, but the extra grams are well worth it because if you don't have the right tool when the chips are down, you're dead weight anyway. This tool features four spoke wrench sizes, seven hex wrench sizes, an 8mm and 10mm open wrench, and both a phillips and flathead screwdriver. Specs: Weight: 168 grams; Length - 3.5 inches; Frame - 6061-T6 aluminum; Tools - 6051 high tensile steel.

5Anyone who rides a bike should have a multitool, and this is the best one to get.Jun 09, 2007
By John P. Thiel "John T."
This is the Swiss Army Knife or Leatherman of bike tools. If you have no other tools, get this first, because it's all you'll need 90% of the time even if you're into installing your own parts.

I've had mine for over ten years, and rescued not only myself but dozens of other riders from walking their bikes home by making sure I always carry it. And it's a handy multitool for household fixes as well.

If the quality, strength, and durability of this tool aren't enough to convince you, how about this: Just last week, I was removing my crank with it, and the bolt wouldn't turn, so I stood on it--as I had done many times over the years for things like getting a pedal off--and it finally popped a nut.

Entirely my fault--should have been using a crank wrench--but I sent an e-mail to Crank Brothers wondering if it was covered under the warranty and what I would have to do (if it would be even worth it), and within an hour they responded that they were sending me a brand new replacement--no proof of purchase or explaination required to see if it was a flaw in the tool or not, they just replaced it. I received the new one in the mail in just a few days. They also offered to fix my old tool to keep as a spare. Wow.

When I told my friends about this, they said they've had similar experiences with Crank Brothers on everything they make. Absolutely outstanding service on top-of-the-line products.

Besides all that, I think it's the best designed, strongest, and most useful bike multitool money can buy.

5Multi tool that does it allJan 15, 2007

This is a great, relatively light weight tool that slips easily into a rear jersey pocket or camelback. The chain tool & spoke wrenches come in handy if ever needed. Nice small design & the custom support (if you ever need it) from Crank Brothers is the best in the industry.

5Every thing at the same toolJan 18, 2008

This tool is the best. You have every thing at your hand.
It's made with hard steel or aluminium , I don't know but is very strong.
It rescued me many times in my trips, also when I'm home, I use it instead other tools.
Not any plastic parts.

Buy it, You will not regret.

4Great all around tool - don't ride without one!Mar 24, 2009
By D. Mayer "greenpeacedoug"
I enjoy doing my own bicycle repair, but my tool collection is woefully imcomplete. The Crank Brothers M-17 multi-tool goes a long way towards fixing that. It has a full set of hex wrenches (allen keys) for doing brake, threadless headset, derailler, fender, and some crank adjustments. It also has a genious integrated chain tool/spoke wrench for breaking/setting links and truing wheels. One issue with the chain tool: it is quite difficult to use with the newer beaded-pin Shimano chains as there is nothing on the tool to brace your non-turning hand. Not impossible, but difficult. This is true of almost all chain tools that come with multi-tools. If you're going to do frequent chain repairs, consider getting a dedicated shop-grade chain tool.

True to Crank Brothers' form, the tool is very well designed and very attractively finished. It's solid steel - not for gram counters, but perfect for recreational and touring cyclists. The 19-tool variety only adds an extra size of philips and flat screwdrivers.

The only improvement I would make is to lock the fold-out tools at a 270 degree angle so you would get right-angle locked, 180 degree unlocked, and 90 degree unlocked. However, in real world applications, it's not a big deal.

5Well made multi-tool.Jan 07, 2011
By G. Forster
I purchased this tool for my new mountain bike. I was going to get the 19-function tool, but they were out of stock, and the only difference was another flat blade and phillips screwdriver. I don't think that I'll miss the other 2 tools.

The tool has a feel of quality - the attachments have a nice finish and everything works as intended. It will be a little tricky to use the 8mm & 10mm crescent wrenches (the stepped notch in the side of the chain tool), but I don't think that I have any hex-head bolts on my bike - all fasteners are allen head.

By no means should this be the only tool that you own. It's for emergencies, and will work well for occasional use. But I have no doubt that this will last, and won't leave me stranded in time of need. It's also relatively light in weight for a big hunk of metal.
