4Awesome Tent.May 25, 2011
By MeganAshley
This tent is really great! Had it for a month now. I'll just list pro's and cons to keep this review simple:
PROS
1 - Large! Lots of room and tall enough to stand!
2 - Roof vents! Keeps it cool.
3 - Large windows, front area towards the door is mostly screened - very nice!
4 - Fairly waterproof right out of the bag. Did not waterproof and left it out in a storm where we got 50mm of rain! (yes, 50!! It was coming down harder than I have ever seen... hail included.) There was only a very small (about a tbsp) puddle of water by one side.
5 - Seams are taped, fabrice is of good quality.
6 - Poles are very sturdy.
7 - SETS UP IN NO TIME! I am a 24 year old girl and did it by myself for the first time without reading instructions in 56 second (watched some videos on youtube before purchasing :))

CONS
1 - Tent is heavy and difficult to get back in the bag (like most tents)
2 - In the bag, it is quite long, and needs to be stored near the back of my Sunfire's trunk, or else it does not fit.
3 - tent pegs you get with it are CRAP. Spring for some better ones.
4 - Taking it down takes a bit of effort, although it still takes less time than a traditional tent. It's just a different kind of hassel with this one as you have to fold everything in very carefully so you don't pinch the fabric and tear a hole.

All in all, and awesome tent. We got new pegs, waterproofed the seams and fabric, and bring a tarp to put over top just for extra protection from very high volumes of water. Awesome tent, well worth the $$. :)

1I was wrong. And that's never easy for me to admit.Aug 15, 2011
By lukeburns
Let me start by saying I definitely feel in love with the "idea" of this tent and made the purchase with my heart and not my brain. I read all the negative reviews (no rain fly, poor door design, water everywhere) but choose to focus more on the positive ones (goes up in like 5 seconds, very spacious, no rain fly needed.) Our Colman 4 Person had been serving us well for years, but we've added two outdoor-loving little girls to the family and it was time to upgrade. We live in Belgium and rain is an everyday occurrence, so I figured I could benefit from having a tent that would go up and come down before the next time the sky opened up. I set it up in the backyard (by myself in just over a minute) and let the weather have its way with it for a few nights. After it stayed put and kept the water out, I was convinced it was time to take it for a field test. We set out this past weekend to camp from Friday afternoon until Monday morning. The rain came and went several times a day as anticipated but the painfully obvious design flaws of the Instant Tent forced us to cut the trip a few days short. Here's the short list of reasons this is a failed experiment of a tent:

The doors are awful. Both the back and front door's zippers catch on the rain flap....constantly... about every foot. There is no way to do it with one hand. Both doors are also placed just so that they funnel the water from the roof into the tent or onto your head if you jump the gun getting out in a hurry.

The windows are a hassle. Once rolled down, the ties (two of which broke) are either horribly placed, or missing all together. This means the fabric just kind of hangs there and we had to "custom" roll and fasten them every time they went up and back down (which were numerous in the rain.)

Then there was the condensation. Looking back it makes perfect sense if water can't get in, it can't get out either. I thought keeping the many windows cracked would be a fix. I was wrong. After tracking in two days worth of moisture, and keeping the windows and doors zipped up through the night, we woke up to an indoor rain shower from the gathering condensation on the roof. Our sleeping bags had soaked up the majority of the water, but there were still a few puddles around and if you bumped a wall, you were treated to a similar experience to pulling on a tree branch after a good rain.

We were not soaked, but I could only see it getting worst, so we packed up camp in the rain. Just to add insult to injury, I was in the process of showing a fellow camper how easy it was to pack up the tent when one of the tension straps ripped off in my hand. Now I'm soaked, mad, and embarrassed.

It's hard for me to believe Coleman, a company that I've always trusted, could have properly tested this dud. Seems to me a few days in a realistic camping situation would have provide them more than enough feedback to convince them this wreck of a tent design was not gonna cut it.

I thought I'd be able to overcome the Instant Tent's flaws with my years of outdoor experience (born and raised in the Sierra Nevadas) and my problem solving ability (12 years in the Army.) I was wrong. And that's never easy for me to admit.

4Perfect for weekend camping tripsJun 29, 2011
By Regular customer
This is a fantastic tent.

The good:
- Takes around 60 seconds to unpack from the bag and set-up (watch the video on YouTube)
- Takes around 2 minutes to take down, wrap, roll, and pack back into the bag (watch the video on YouTube)
- Good height inside
- Overall good design and construction
- Excellent ventilation when you want to let in fresh air to cool the tent down

Needs some improvement:
- Guy line tighteners are not very effective. I replaced them immediately with a set of Figure 9 tighteners... [...] (this is a problem with most tents, and the Figure 9 system is awesome)
- One of the guy lines that came with the tent seems to have been damaged at the factory, so the next time I use the tent I will probably also replace the guy line too
- There needs to be a way to secure the door zip to allow one-handed opening
- The usual cheap tent stakes are provided that bend easily. I replaced them immediately with a set of aluminum ones that work much better and are much stronger... [...]

Not much to complain about really. I wish I had bought this years ago, as takes away one of the biggest hassles of camping and makes it so much easier to get away on a Friday after work for a great weekend of camping.

5Coleman will back thier warrantyFeb 02, 2012

I just got a replacement tent and a fly promised I would get from Coleman consumer service. It is a long story why my tent purchased needed to be replaced. I will say from experience the instant tent is well worth buying. Getting the new fly being offered for certain models of the instant tent makes this tent even more desirable to own. I can't wait until spring or maybe a trip south next month to use this new tent. Hey if you have some time one day check out the sister sites Coleman has. There is numerous versions of the instant tent I assume made for the countries they are being sold in. I like the Coleman Australian site as well as others. Have a good one folks. I am going to set up the new tent and check out how it looks with the new fly.

1Not in a Rainy weekendAug 24, 2011
By Pitcrew Camper
This tent was easy to setup. Yes it may take more then a minute but that was okay. This tent is roomy inside and has good space for about five people. As far as fitting 9 people in this tent only if they are leprechauns. If it rains please bring your Scuba gear because you will need it. The only that save me and my son was that we purchased cots in case the tent may get wet. The tent flooded and looked like a lake all I needed was fishing gear. Good thing for the plastic storage bags that stored his dry clothes. I also use a tarp on top of the tent which only helped in keeping our heads dry. This tent was guaranty to keep you dry. Yeah right. Great setup but bad in the rain. I would not recommend this tent for any outdoorsmen, outdoorswomen, campers or kids. It is cute to look at but not to own. The zipper were located too low which help the water rush in during the night. The tent was thin. It would be worth an extra $100 dollars if it were made better and zippers set higher to help stop the water from flooding in. NOT RECOMMEND!
